Halesowen Chess Club Team Reports 2019-20-21
This has been a very strange period, with different leagues taking different routes to completing the extended season. Birmingham eventually agreed to finalise league tables on a points per match completed basis. The same decision as Wolverhampton had made many months earlier. The Dudley leagues were declared void with no trophies or titles awarded, whilst the Worcester County league remain suspended, hoping to play the remaining matches at some point. A brief report on each team follows, either from captains or by myself.
Played 10 W4, D1, L5. 9th/13. Of team regulars only Finlay scored over 50% with 6/10 on board 1. With the withdrawal of Nick Arkell the team only had 5 players, so reserves where involved in every match and performed superbly, with seven players playing a total of 15 games and scoring 57%
Played 10 W3 D4 L3 4th/12. Best performers were Mark (5/8), Andy (6.5/9) and Bob (4.5/6) (Adrian)
Played 10 W2 D1 L7 10th/12. Best performer Silas 4.5/8, Tony S (4/7). (Paul)
Played 10 W2 D2 L6 10th/13 Best performer Martyn (6/9) Player shortages resulted in defaulting five boards
Played 8 W7, D1, L0. 1st/11. League Champions! All team regulars scored over 50% and the team scored 64% in total. Highest percent scorers were Mike and Malcolm with 75% but Finlay scored the most points and was unbeaten with 5.5/8.
Played 7, W0 D2 L5 11th/11. Best performers were Pete (3/5) and Silas (2.5/4). A tough season made harder by player absences.
Played 11 W2 D1 L8 6th/6. Best performer was Martyn with 4.5/8. A special mention to Joyce with 4 wins.
Worcester County League
These divisions are in suspension and the remaining games may be played at some point.
Played 5 W3, D0, L2. We have one match remaining and a win will see us as champions. A draw and we need other results to go our way. Top scorer was Finlay with an excellent 4.5/5, closely followed by Mike 4/5 and John 2.5/3. (John)
Played 6 W3 D2 L1 One more match was defaulted by opponents shortly before lockdown. Three further fixtures remain un-played. Many outcomes are possible but winning the outstanding games would secure the title. Highest scorers to date are Paul (3.5/5) Pete (3/5) and Mike (2.5/4).
Dudley and District League
These divisions were declared void with no games played after lockdown in March 2020.
Played 4 W1, D0, L3.
Played 6 W2 D1 L3 Pete scored over 50% (3/5) with Don and Paul at 50%. Only one match remained to be played but other clubs had as many of 4 fixtures to complete. (Paul)
For what it’s worth, we played four of six scheduled games without any defaults – two wins and a draw leaving us second. Players included those Taylor boys – Tony and Paul, Silas, Pete Banks, Dave Etheridge, Chris Lees, Joyce and Richard Woolley with Pete being the most frequent player. Thanks to all, anyway. And sorry for all the whining. (Martyn)
